CORNING - The familiar bell-ringing alongside signature Red Kettles on behalf of The Salvation Army is not reaching as many ears this holiday season, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign, held from mid-September to Christmas Eve, a key fundraiser for the Christian charity organization, has seen numbers fall sharply during one of the most critical times of the year.
“It’s been very difficult,” said Corning Salvation Army Captain Jose Borrero. “We don’t have as many bell-ringing locations compared to past years, and finding volunteers for the Red Kettles has been difficult. Often volunteers either cancel or have not scheduled because of fear of COVID-19.”
