BORING, Ore. (AP) A line formed out the door during the lunch rush at the Carver Hangar, a family-owned restaurant and sports bar, and waitresses zipped in and out of the kitchen trying to keep up with orders as customers backed up in the lobby.
Indoor dining has been banned in much of Oregon for nearly two months, but the eatery 20 miles southeast of Portland was doing a booming business and an illegal one. The restaurant’s owners, Bryan and Liz Mitchell, fully reopened Jan. 1 in defiance of Democratic Gov. Kate Brown’s COVID-19 indoor dining ban in their county despite the risk of heavy fines and surging coronavirus cases.

Approximately 80 people gathered in St. Helens on Saturday, Jan. 9, in protest of Gov. Kate Brown s restrictions on businesses. Gyms, movie theaters, indoor dining and other businesses are closed in Columbia County to slow the spread of COVID-19.
Organizer Caden Willaby, a 2020 graduate of St. Helens High School, told the crowd that elected officials didn t understand how much the restrictions were harming local businesses. The small businesses in our town are struggling and should be represented and protected by these same elected officials, Willaby told the mostly maskless crowd. I stand here today in support of small businesses that are being forced to obey a tyrannical governor like Kate Brown.

Swearing-in ceremony called off as mayors, city councilors appalled by county commissioner s Facebook
Elected officials from across the Portland metro region are weighing in on statements made by County Commissioner Mark Shull on his personal Facebook account representing racist, transphobic, Islamophobic and anti-immigrant views.
Shull who took office Monday, Jan. 4, and was set to be sworn in Wednesday, Jan. 13 is facing harsh criticism from the sentiments he s espoused online, as well as calls for his resignation. Clackamas County spokesperson Kimberly Dinwiddie said recent threats of violence have led to the decision to cancel the swearing-in ceremony for Shull and newly elected County Board Chair Tootie Smith.
