Kansas was 45th in the country in solar energy last year, with only 0.2% of its energy coming from solar.
A massive solar farm stretching from west of Gardner possibly into Douglas County will, if it comes to fruition, become the biggest in Kansas, a state that has lagged behind in solar energy development.
Billy Wilkins, project director for the West Gardner Solar Project, said Tuesday that his company, NextEra Energy, has already gotten signatures from landowners for 2,000 acres of the proposed 3,500-acre, $320 million project.
The ground-mounted solar array would not necessarily run contiguously, however. Wilkins said the project would provide setbacks and would likely exclude land that is used for recreation or environmental purposes.

It would be a big day for the Lady Beavers, as they were able to pick up a road sweep with wins of 14-9 and 9-7.
In their first game, Scott City led 2-0 after the first inning, only to see the Lady Bluejays pull to within 2-0 after two innings. The Stanton County Sheriffâs office is continuing to investigate a two vehicle accident in Northern Stanton County that claimed the driver of one of the vehicles. The accident occurred at about 1:50 p.m. at the intersection of Hwy 35 and 846th Road north of Woodland Park. The accident occurred when an eastbound pickup appears to have failed to stop for a stop sign at the Highway and drove into the path of a southbound car on Hwy 35. The driver of the pickup was ejected from her vehicle onto the roadway after it rolled onto its top and lifesaving efforts were undertaken by bystanders and law enforcement, but proved futile and the driver was pronounced dead on scene. The 21-year old driver of the southbound car was restrained, with airbag deployment and transported to FRHS by Hoskins/Woodland Park rescue. The pickup invol

STANTON, Neb. (KTIV) - Authorities have identified the drivers involved in a two-vehicle accident that left one person dead Thursday afternoon in northeast Nebraska.
The Stanton County Sheriff s Office says 57-year-old Francine Wolff of Norfolk, Nebraska was killed after she was ejected from her pickup during a crash north of Woodland Park.
According to a press release, the accident occurred just before 2 p.m. when the pickup Wolff was driving failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of U.S. Highway 35 and 846th Road. The release says the eastbound pickup drove into the path of a southbound car on Highway 35 driven by 21-year-old Devon Beckman.
