In barely two hours from Greenwich, via tree-lined peaceful New England roads, you can travel back three hundred years to the “best documented small town in America.”
Historic Deerfield is welcoming any and all for its summer and fall season and best of all, kids under 17 are free to the historic museum through November.
Easily accessible, the town is within a 50 to 100 mile radius of Hartford, Albany, New Haven, Fairfield County, Springfield, and director of marketing Laurie Nivison would know.
She’s been commuting from her Connecticut home for nearly eight years.
“It’s a beautiful drive,” Nivison said.
World Naked Gardening Day is this Saturday
What clothes you wear when you garden and how you look in them may not be as important as the sharpness of your pruners. But if you spend a lot of time there, you do give it some thought. For most of us, comfort and mobility come first. Forget traditional blue jeans stiff and unyielding, binding in all the wrong places. I favor old, soft corduroys or maybe stretch jeans the ’90s’ gift to the gardening world. They allow you to bend, squat, kneel and they’re sexy. Most “gardener’s pants” are baggy in the butt, with gathered waists. But come to think of it, that look is making a comeback.
Weaver Judith Blank transforms discarded garments into rugs
BAR HARBOR In one form or another, since nearly the beginning of our history, humans have been weaving. From sedges and nettles for basketry and fishing nets to exquisite tapestries of silk and gold, weaving, beyond warming our floors and walls, has helped us build shelters, catch food and clothe ourselves.
“I’m in a tradition,” said Judith Blank, leaning against the doorway of her workshop on Norway Drive. “I know in America you’re not supposed to say you’re in a tradition. But I’m very much in a tradition.”
