Some seniors reported struggling overall but made the best of their situations. Gabriella Fournier said she found positives within all the negatives thrown her way during the virtual year. “Some of my professors actually got to know me more virtually in my smaller classes,” Fournier (senior-public relations) said. “There s more availability to meet with them since they can take a Zoom call from anywhere, and it’s easier to reach out.”

How Penn State Schreyer Scholars have written honors theses during the pandemic

However, the coronavirus pandemic added unprecedented challenges to some working on their theses. Ezra Gershanok used his thesis to create a demand curve and find the optimal price for the Keyper phone wallet, a product he and his roommate designed to prevent losing room keys. Gershanok (senior-economics) said he wrote the thesis for entrepreneurs because he said many tend to “guess [optimal product] prices” and miss out on profits. His goal was “to bring the tools of an economist to an entrepreneur that otherwise didn’t have the background in economics, the time or the resources to hire an economist to figure out their optimal price.”
