Critical Race Theory is a culture war flashpoint. Teachers see that as an opportunity Jun. 9 In his heart, David Martinez is a teacher. State, districts lift mask restrictions

State, districts lift mask restrictions With COVID-19 infection rates waning, mask requirements are being lifted locally as well as statewide. On Tuesday, May 11, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster issued an Executive Order (2021-23) empowering South Carolina parents to decide whether their children should wear masks in public schools throughout the state. With the order, the governor directed the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control - in consultation with the S.C. Department of Education - to develop and distribute a standardized form that a parent or legal guardian may sign to opt their child out of mask requirements imposed by any public school official or public school district.

Teachers cancel protest due to harassing and threatening messages

SC for Ed has cancelled a May 17th protest due to harassing and threatening messages. In a statement to their followers on Saturday, the working teachers group claims that groups with extreme views about masking are misrepresenting their protest as mask-related.This comes after Gov. Henry McMaster’s executive order lifting mask mandates in schools. Instead, the group says the event was meant to bring awareness to the continued mistreatment of South Carolina public school teachers. In announcing the protest last week, SC for Ed stated “the point is that was the last straw in a year where we’ve been treated horribly, and if we don’t stand up and say you have to make changes or you won’t have any teachers left.”The protest was set to take place in Columbia at the State House, the Governor s mansion and the SC Department of Education. There s no word on whether or not the protest will be rescheduled.
