Rhode Islanders on Thursday had their chance to sound off on a House bill that would dissolve the Providence Tourism Council and instead send funds to the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau. Those opposed, which included restaurateurs and Providence Tourism Council Chair and Commissioner Alexis Gorriaran, raised concerns over transparency, independence and a lack of public input on the proposal sponsored by Democratic Rep. And on Thursday afternoon, their demands will finally become a reality when Governor Dan McKee signs the Nursing Home Staffing and Quality Act. PROVIDENCE The COVID-19 pandemic made a bad situation worse in nursing homes throughout Rhode Island. Many facilities had shared rooms, and the virus easily spread from one resident to the next. The shortage of personal protective equipment didn’t help. And when hospitals transferred their patients to nursing homes for rehab, they were not always required to test them again for COVID-19, which increased the number of infections.

Law sets highest staff mandate in US for RI nursing homes

PROVIDENCE  Gov. Dan McKee on Thursday signed into law a nursing-home staffing mandate that loomed large over the 2020 elections amid an aggressive drive by the Services Employees International Union to oust any state lawmaker unwilling to commit. While the nursing-home industry warned legislators the mandate would result in closures, advocates of the legislation said it would prevent residents from having to endure long waits for care and boost the wages of currently overstretched staff.  Today we take a step forward for staff, residents and their families, McKee said during the signing ceremony outside the State House. Stronger staffing standards and [more] funding for direct care staff will help raise the bar on resident care in our state.
