Metro briefs: Ramsey blocks picketing in residential areas

Metro briefs: Ramsey blocks picketing in residential areas By Star Tribune staff Text size Copy shortlink: Ramsey has joined the growing list of cities that prohibit targeted picketing in residential areas. The City Council on Tuesday approved the measure 6-1, with Council Member Chelsee Howell casting the dissenting vote. She supported the spirit of the law, she said, but would rather do that with laws we already have. Though the city of about 28,000 residents in northwest Anoka County has not had any cases of picketing in neighborhoods, Police Chief Jeff Katers said the measure is aimed at keeping residential areas peaceful and safe, but still allowing protesters to gather in other parts of the city.

House DFL takes testimony on gas tax, vehicle sales tax increases

Created: April 07, 2021 06:04 PM The Minnesota House DFL majority is trying to pass the biggest transportation funding bill since 2008, the last time the legislature approved a gas tax increase. The 2008 bill created $7 billion in new funding for transportation. The 2021 bill would raise about $1.5 billion over four years. Republicans were upset the bill and tax increases were introduced so late in the session without public hearings. It s unconscionable, said Rep. Paul Torkelson, R-Hanska, during a virtual hearing of the House Transportation Finance and Policy Committee. This is not the way the legislature is supposed to work. We re supposed to bring these bills forward to committee, analyze them, take testimony.

Potsdam police reform draft nears finish line

POTSDAM — The Potsdam Police Reform Committee has one more public meeting planned before completing a draft document the public can see and comment on. The committee, which has been rejoined by two of three people who left the committee late last year, met last week over Zoom and broadcast on Facebook Live to hear from three subcommittees that have been formed. John Youngblood, a professor at SUNY Potsdam, and Scott Schulte, a nurse anesthetist at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, had left the committee in December but rejoined after discussions with new committee chairs Maggie M. McKenna and Alexandra Jacob-Wilke. “The hope was by dividing up the work it will make that (hitting the deadline of April 1) easier,” Mrs. Jacob-Wilke said.
