Officials remove Confederate monument outside of a Louisiana city hall Brandon Sapienza
Residents gathered around a statue of a Confederate general cheered on Saturday as workers took the statue off its pedestal where it stood for 99 years in Louisiana.
On Friday, the United Daughters of the Confederacy signed a settlement agreement with the city of Lafayette to move the statue of Gen. Alfred Mouton. A hearing about the statue’s removal had been initially set for July 26.
“The Confederacy has surrendered,” said attorney Jerome Moroux to The Advocate. Moroux was tasked with representing the city and the 16 residents who wanted to see the statue gone.
