When I see a veteran or a person in a military uniform, I don t ask if they are Republican or Democrat. I say, “Thank you.”
When I interact with minorities, the physically and mentally challenged or the elderly at my work, I don t ask which party they belong to. I ask how I can help them.
When I see other local growers like myself bringing fruits and vegetables to the food bank for the homeless and food insecure, we talk about crops, the weather or our families. What we don t talk about is politics.
As a lifelong Democrat, I have always believed that all people deserve an equal opportunity. That s part of the definition of a Democrat. Everyone is equal. But when politics enters the conversation, rifts start to develop among people. And rifts are what keep issues from being solved and people from being treated equally.

Former Lone Tree Mayor Jon Green emerged as the Democratic candidate chosen to run for the open seat on the Johnson County Board of Supervisors.
It took three rounds of voting for Green to secure the nomination Tuesday night as Johnson County Democratic delegates met at the Fairgrounds. Convention rules require a candidate to receive a majority vote to win. He received 105 of the 281 votes in the first round, with Susan Vileta being eliminated. In the second round, Green got 116 of 281 votes, with Scott Finlayson eliminated. In the closely-contested third round, Green edged the remaining candidate, Coralville city councilor Meghan Foster, 139-137.

A Johnson County candidate got a big endorsement from the senator from Vermont on Monday. As mayor of Lone Tree, Jon successfully fought for living wages and to revitalize rural Iowa through access to broadband and affordable child care. I m proud to support his grassroots campaign for Johnson County Supervisor, Sanders said in a statement Monday. Jon was one of the earliest Bernie supporters in Iowa and a real advocate for rural Iowans, Sanders political director Oliver Hidalgo-Wohlleben tweeted Monday.
Finlayson s life has been all about service
I am writing to encourage local Democratic Party delegates and alternates to vote for Scott Finlayson for Johnson County Supervisor in the special nominating convention Tuesday. I’m a concerned voter with deep roots in this community my family was among the first 20 in Coralville, and the first 100 in Iowa City. My great-uncle was mayor of Coralville for 35 years. We have always been involved in and cared deeply about this community. What makes Iowa special is the people, and Scott’s life has been all about service. He is devoted to this county and serving its people. As deputy treasurer and former assistant county attorney, Scott knows the county. He knows who to reach out to, how to do it … and he listens. Scott is a highly effective leader who will make an excellent, hard-working Supervisor.
