SEAFRONT businesses are rallying against a hike in car parking charges, branded a “tourism tax” by traders who fear it will drive daytrippers out of Southend. But seafront bosses say the hike in fees will have a “devastating” impact and drive visitors away from visiting the town. Council bosses insist the proposed changes are a “good deal” and will hopefully bring more people to Southend. However, Paul Thompson, seafront businessman and former chairman of the seafront traders’ association, said: “It will be devastating. “We’re going to get an initial rush of people when the lockdown finishes. “They’re going to arrive, get hit with the horrendous £24 charge and they’re not going to come back.
SOUTHEND and Basildon hospitals raised million of pounds from car parking charges - including hundreds of thousands of pounds from staff parking fees. Now, campaigners have called for charges for staff to be scrapped after data revealed that £1.6million was made from car parking charges at the Mid and South Essex Hospital Trust last year. Specifically, Basildon and Thurrock Hospital Foundation Trust made £2.7million through parking. At the Mid and South Essex Trust, £155,422 was raked in through charging staff to park, compared to £733,738 at the Basildon and Thurrock Trust. But bosses have assured that the money made is ploughed into hospital services.
