UK Celebrates Women s History Month

of LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 5, 2021) Throughout the month of March, the University of Kentucky will recognize Women’s History Month with a series of events and special programs. Women’s History Month is about honoring the achievements and contributions women have made across the U.S. and throughout the world. The UK Martin Luther King (MLK) Center will host a variety of programs, in collaboration with its campus partners, in addition to the College of Arts and Sciences, the UK Women’s Forum, the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) and other campus organizations. Many programs will honor UK women throughout the institution s history.

Every day, Brandon Valentine-Parris takes a 20 mile-ride on his midnight black Canyon Inflite bicycle, accompanied by the percussion of soca beats. When he’s on the verge of exhaustion, he just turns the music up and remembers his purpose. “I just want to be fast,” he said. “I want to be the best in my country, and I want to go to certain places that a lot of people don’t get to go. That was literally the only driving point.”

Chief Pamela Smith Is Now The First Black Woman To Lead 230-Year-Old U.S. Park Police Yesterday, the National Park Service announced Pamela Smith has been named the new Chief of the United States Park Police (USPP), the nation’s oldest federal law enforcement agency. Smith, a 23-year veteran of the USPP, will become the first Black woman to lead the 230-year-old agency when she begins her new role on February 28. “I have dedicated my career to the professionalism of law enforcement, and it is my highest honor and privilege to serve as Chief of Police,” said Chief Smith. “Today’s officers face many challenges, and I firmly believe challenges present opportunities. I look forward to leading this exemplary team as we carry out our mission with honesty and integrity.”

(WLOX) - More than 100 years ago, young African American women strived to uplift their community in a positive way. Black Greek-lettered organizations known as the ‘Divine Nine’ allowed them to do that. Here on the Gulf Coast, there are many people involved in those organizations that serve their community and carrying on the history. You hear the chants mainly on college campuses and you see the strolls, but most importantly for the organizations, it’s the service Black Greek-lettered sororities provide to communities nationwide.
