FLCC hosts online talk on suffragist, early climate scientist

Photo provided by FLCC Finger Lakes Community College will celebrate Women’s History Month on Wednesday, March 10, with a virtual talk exploring the life of a local suffagist and scientist whose discoveries laid the foundation for climate research. Eunice Newton Foote, who grew up in Bloomfield, was also the fifth person to sign the Declaration of Sentiments at the 1848 Women’s Rights Convention in Seneca Falls. Former East Bloomfield Historical Society Director Leif R. HerrGesell will give the free, public talk via Webex from 1 to 2:15 p.m. A link to join will be posted on the college’s event calendar at events.flcc.edu.

While researching her 2011 book, Nothing Daunted, Dorothy Wickenden was told a story that stuck with her. Wickenden was interviewing a descendent of Ros Underwood, who together with Dorothy Woodruff, Wickenden s grandmother, would leave behind her privileged life in Auburn to teach school in Colorado. The two women s adventure was the basis of Wickenden s New York Times bestseller, subtitled The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West. Before they left Auburn, though, Ros and Woodruff shared a moment that would become family lore. The two were little girls, standing in front of the family home on South Street. And there, Wickenden was told, they saw Harriet Tubman.

Women’s Suffrage Movement program             In recognition of International Women’s Day on March 8, Dr. Gary Hylander, PhD, will once again entertain and enlighten us with American history. Join us on March 8 at 2:30 p.m. as Hylander explores the journeys many had to take on their way to the ballot box.             It took 72 years for women to win the right to vote, after suffragists first rallied at the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention. The battle was long, heart-felt and sometimes bitter, but the 19th Amendment was finally ratified on Aug. 18, 1920, in the wake of the Spanish Flu pandemic.
