Last week, the famed French jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels unveiled its new high jewelry collection, Sous Les Étoiles, during Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week. It’s a magnificent exploration of the wonders of the stars, sky, and galaxies near and far with 150 breathtaking works across styles, from dramatic necklaces to timepieces.
Celestial phenomena have always fascinated Van Cleef & Arpels designers, going all the way back to the beginning. In 1907, the sale of a star-shape brooch in pearls and diamonds was mentioned in one of the maison’s first accounting ledgers.
It’s been a decade or so since VCA last turned to celestial inspiration points, with 2010’s Les Voyages Extraordinaires, which drew on themes from four of Jules Verne’s novels including

PARIS For high jewelry, 2021 may be the beginning of a new era.
Although almost no traditional couture shows were scheduled this week, a handful of houses on Place Vendôme Chanel, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Boucheron among them planned viewings of high jewelry collections by appointment, and in keeping with local health guidelines.
The heavens have inspired mankind ever since the ancient Egyptians worshipped Ra, god of the sun, and the Ancient Greeks believed the constellations were placed there by the gods. Now Van Cleef & Arpels turns to the skies for its latest high jewellery collection, Sous Les Étoiles, which combines age-old celestial motifs with the latest in 21st century astrophysics.
Always with a foot in the past and all things fantastical, the house’s designers immersed themselves in centuries of history, astrology and fairytales about the heavens to create a collection of more than 120 pieces.
