SAN DIEGO (KGTV) More than 126,000 COVID vaccine doses have gone to waste in California since the roll-out began, a number that healthcare experts hailed as a success given the massive scale and complicated logistics underpinning the vaccination campaign.
However, looming expiration dates on a large tranche of doses this summer and lingering hesitancy could push Californiaâs wastage rate higher, experts said.
San Diego County is putting more emphasis on small, community-based clinics for vaccine distribution. ABC 10News Reporter Jared Aarons takes an In-Depth look at what that means for the county's four remaining Super Station sites, as well as how successful the program has been.

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Vaccination Super Stations across San Diego County are seeing a sudden, major drop in people getting vaccinated. Both UC San Diego Health and Sharp Healthcare, which run the Super Stations, reported major drops in attendance in early May.
Suzanne Shea, Sharp Healthcareâs Vice President of System Pharmacy said Sharp recently hit half a million doses given out, but then hit a major wall this past week. Previously, they faced dose and volunteer shortages. Now, that has changed.
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Sharp HealthCare announced Thursday it has hit the significant milestone of administering 500,000 COVID-19 vaccines to the community.
Sharp said it has fully vaccinated more than 225,000 San Diegans, around 20% of those fully vaccinated in the county.
According to the County of San Diego, 75% of residents 16 and older (or approximately 2.017 million people) need to be vaccinated to reach herd immunity.
This means approximately 1 million more San Diegans still need to be vaccinated.
“It’s easy to get vaccinated, and thousands of slots are now available at Sharp. Simply walk into the following Sharp sites, Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” said Vice President of Sharp HealthCare’s system pharmacy services Suzanne Shea.
Sharp has run the South Bay Vaccination Supersite in Chula Vista since it opened in January, when hundreds of people made appointments on Day One. Vaccination.
