Pub joins list of Reading s protected community assets

Rose and Thistle A pub has joined a list of important protected venues in Reading, celebrated for their community value. The Rose & Thistle pub, on Argyle Road near Reading West Station, has become an asset of community value (ACV), joining 10 other sites currently on the Reading Borough Council (RBC) list. Recent additions include The After Dark nightclub, which was granted ACV listing in December and The Hop Leaf pub gained the status in October. Once a building is added to the list, it must be used to further the social wellbeing or social interests of the local community for a five-year period, after which the property is removed from the list.

After Dark nightclub loses licence as court upholds Reading Council decision

The After Dark The After Dark nightclub will have to close permanently, after it lost an appeal on Tuesday. Reading Borough Council’s (RBC) decision to revoke the legendary club’s licence in June 2019 was upheld by the High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court yesterday. The club’s licence was revoked by the council due to noise and safety concerns but, according to manager Zee Khan the magistrate upheld the decision because of the noise issues. The club has been closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. Mr Khan said the decision to revoke the licence was upheld due to one family complaining about noise from the club.

Reading After Dark club made Asset of Community Value

BBC News Published A nightclub where Radiohead and Supergrass have played has been given protected status. After Dark, which opened in 1973, has been made an Asset of Community Value by Reading Borough Council. Its new status means it must be used for the community and is protected from a change of use or demolition. Club manager Zee Khan described the successful application by Reading Civic Society as a really positive thing for the community. They are an independent group of people and they have valued the club and the council has verified it as being a very significant part of Reading.
