Jewish Federation of Cincinnati holds Super Sunday virtually

On Sunday, April 18, 2021, Jewish Federation of Cincinnati held their annual fundraiser, Super Sunday, virtually. The theme of this year’s event was “Reconnecting with Community.” In addition to the fundraising phone bank, this year’s schedule included several community building activities for participants to renew their ties to the Cincinnati Jewish community after more than a year of Covid distancing. The morning began from 7:30-9 a.m. with a drive-through pick-up at the Mayerson JCC of bagels, cream cheese, and coffee (pre-ordered) by the phone bank volunteers; pre-ordered kits for the cupcake decorating at the end of the morning were also distributed at the same time. The Super Sunday co-chairs Ed and Jessica Kuresman and many Federation staff and committee chairs were at the JCC to greet volunteers as they picked up their bags.

From the Pages

By Samuel Bruel (Continued) In 1825 N. Longworth for one dollar added by a deed of gift fifty feet in the rear of the first lot [of the first Jewish cemetery in Cincinnati], which increased it to twenty-five by one hundred. In 1836 the congregation purchased the adjoining lot of twenty-five feet from N. Longworth, which comprises the entire lot. This ground was used for twenty-eight years until December 1849, when it was finally closed, although not quite filled. — July 28, 1854 150 Years Ago Mr. S. N. Pike has made the sensible and pleasing decision to change his beautiful hall in this city into a still more beautiful and attractive opera-house. With characteristic energy, he commenced the work on Tuesday last a few hours after his arrival in the city, and he intends to have the alterations completed in six weeks, say by June 1. Thus Cincinnati is for a second time indebted to Mr. Pike for an opera-house, an improvement the city never needed more urgently than now.

Chanukah 2020 in Cincinnati

Cincinnati area synagogues and Jewish institutions celebrated Chanukah 5781, which ran from nightfall on Thursday, Dec. 8 through sundown on  Friday, Dec. 18, with a variety of events for every age and interest, adapted for the current pandemic. The staff of The American Israelite spread out across town to cover as many of those events as possible.   Public menorah lightings and events On Tuesday morning, Dec. 8, Mayor John Cranley hosted his annual pre-Chanukah party in his office at city hall. Rabbi Gershon Avtzon demonstrated the lighting of the menorah and shared lessons about the holiday. This year’s event was smaller than in the past in order to observe Covid-19 restrictions on indoor gatherings.

The American Israelite honors local people of the year

The American Israelite inaugurates a new tradition of thanking Cincinnatians for their service to the Jewish community. As 2020 closes, we are pleased to name people of the year Michael Oestreicher, J. David Rosenberg, William Kahn, Robert Weil and Pam Saeks. Oestreicher and Rosenberg, whose retirement as trustees of the Jewish Foundation was announced last week, participated in the Jewish Hospital Sale. We thank them for their years of service — more than a decade each on the Jewish Foundation Board — to the Cincinnati Jewish community. We also honor Weil, the retiring head of Weil Kahn Funeral Home, and Kahn, his successor, for providing burial services in accordance with Jewish sacred law and traditions (Halakhah). The continuation of availability of halakhic Jewish burial in Cincinnati is a sine qua non for many members of the community and a service for which thanks are owed.
