NEW DELHI: Heritage buildings, precincts in the Central Vista region will be protected, while the redevelopment of the area along with the new Parliament building is constructed, Centre told Lok Sabha on Thursday.
“All listed Heritage buildings, precincts in the Central Vista region shall be protected and any renovation / retrofitting work shall be taken up after approval of Heritage Conservation Committee (HCC),” urban development minister Hardeep Singh Puri told the Lok Sabha in written replies to questions raised by members.
The minister also told the Lok Sabha that “all clearances for construction of new Parliament Building have been obtained. Clearances for other projects as part of Central Vista Redevelopment, as applicable, will be taken as per extant regulations.”

New Delhi: The conditional approval granted by the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) to the new terms of reference for the development or redevelopment of various buildings under the Central Vista project has been criticised by a citizenâs collective on the grounds that this evaluation is piecemeal and hasn’t looked at the alternatives. Also, the group of architects, urban planners, historians and politicians has charged that such an assessment only diverts additional public money when the Supreme Courtâs final decision on the project

The design for the chambers for Members of Parliament, which will come up where the Shram Shakti Bhawan and Transport Bhawan are currently located on Rafi Marg and Sansad Marg respectively, is at the concept stage and will have approximately 800 or so offices for MPs, officials of the HCP Design, Planning and Management Pvt Ltd have said. The new Parliament shall have six committee rooms for conducting business, they further said.

The Central Vista project has raised questions about its need and the spending of huge sums of public money. Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram went to the extent of saying that âthe foundation for a new Parliament building was laid on the ruins of a liberal democracyâ. Ultimately, everything will depend on the verdict of the Supreme Court.

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone on December 10 for an ultra-modern triangular Parliament building, a lot of debate has centred around the need for a new structure and whether public money should be spent by the Government now. This new structure is to replace the 93-year-old circular Parliament House, which was designed by architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker in 1912-13 and inaugurated in 1927.
