To celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, I am going to discuss my list of my 10 favorite albums from Asian and Asian American musicians since 2010. The methodology for constructing this list? Hours of arbitrary sifting through large catalogs of albums, some amount of piecemeal research, lots of listening to albums and much debate.
My criteria for placing each album discussed here rely on my assessments of cultural influence, cultural significance and aesthetic value, all in varying degrees. I have made many rather radical inclusions on the list; I hope these help foster diverse taste and consideration of music scenes in oft-ignored countries in, for example, Southeast and South Asia who can name any Malaysian, any Singaporean, any Cambodian rock bands? Part high school sim, part RPG, all heart.
Atlus has been nothing short of prolific in their development of RPGs, especially those of the turn-based variety. None, however, have reached the heights of popularity like their Persona series, games featuring a protagonist who transfers to a new school, befriends a bunch of his or her classmates, and eventually enters a demon-filled netherworld. For some, that may have been their typical experience in high school, but it s uncanny how well Persona 4 simulates the life of a 16 or 17-year-old student. The combat, story, music, and gameplay are all excellent in their own right. But it s the cast and residents of Inaba, the game s setting, that truly make it Golden.

While many point to how lifelike the next blockbuster action title is or how gorgeous an artistic indie darling is when it comes to evaluating a game, these visuals would lose their impact without a stirring soundtrack to score them. From the chip-tunes of Super Mario Bros to the Gregorian chants of Halo, video game music brings players closer to immersion and fantasy. Much like how a movie’s soundtrack sets the tone for dramatic scenes, game music also helps players connect emotionally with the story.

This second release should surprise no one. Persona titles are renowned for a great many reasons, and one of the biggest is the music. That of course applies with this latest Persona 5 title, Strikers. The Dynasty Warriors approach taken this time out delivers despite rather lofty expectations, and the music is no exception. Despite Persona’s regular composer Shoji Meguro not taking the reins for the spin-off title, the composition team of Atsushi Kitajoh (no stranger to Persona), Gota Masuoka (composer of Dynasty Warriors 9), and Ayana Hira are every bit up to the task

So yes, a month rather hurting for music content, but at least there are still a couple of noteworthy releases worth perusing, right? Here’s to hoping for a busier March!
