San Diego Unified School District officials announced Thursday that the district will pilot a “Boost Democracy” texting initiative for public participation during school board meetings.
The program, which starts Tuesday, will allow community members who plan to remotely participate in school board meetings to sign up to receive texts alerting them when it’s time for their public comments.
It is one of the first such initiatives in the nation, said Shane Harris, the president of the People’s Association of Justice Advocates who pitched the idea. He also is urging the San Diego City Council, the County Board of Supervisors, and the County Board of Education to adopt this text message feature.
SD Unified adopts text alert system proposed by activists at school board meetings
San Diego-This week, the San Diego Unified School District launched a new initiative by local civil rights activist Shane Harris to help people who want to attend school board meetings at home.
The plan is called “Promoting Democracy” and is an open government campaign. It has established a short message notification system that will remind people when issues of concern arise at meetings. Its purpose is to avoid people spending hours watching the conference while waiting for the opportunity to speak.
The San Diego Unified was the first government agency in the county to implement the system. It will be used at the next school district board meeting on July 13.
