Money laundering case: 2 prosecution witnesses testify against ex-CJ SK Sinha

Two prosecution witnesses, including a bench reader of Bangladesh Supreme Court, today gave their depositions before a Dhaka court in a money laundering case filed against former Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha and 10 others.
The witnesses are, SC Bench Reader Mahbub Hossain and Dhaka Bank s Savar EPZ Branch Manager Abu Zahid Ansary.
Judge Shaikh Nazmul Alam of the Special Judge s Court-4 of Dhaka recorded the statements of the witnesses.
But the defence declined to cross-examine the witnesses as they did not mention their clients names in the statements.
HC orders Ishraque to surrender
The High Court on Monday ordered BNP mayoral candidate of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Engineer Ishraque Hossain to surrender before a trial court following appeal by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against his acquittal in a graft case.
An HC bench of Justice Md. Salim passed the order, said Khurshid Alam Khan, ACC lawyer.
The ACC lawyer said that the High Court has accepted to hear the appeal petition.
The court however directed the lower court that deals with the graft case to grant Ishraque bail after his surrender.
ACC Assistant Director Shamsul Alam filed two cases with Ramna Police Station on August 29 and 30, 2010 against Ishraque, also son of late former mayor of undivided Dhaka City Corporation and BNP leader Sadeque Hossain Khoka, and his sister Sarika Sadeque.

The investigation officer of a money laundering case filed against Managing Director of Destiny Group Rafiqul Amin and 45 others today started giving his statement.
Judge Shaikh Nazmul Alam of the Special Court-4 of Dhaka recorded the statement of Mozahar Ali Sardar, a deputy director of the Anti-Corruption Commission.
The judge then fixed January 11 for next hearing as Mozahar Ali could not complete his statement, ACC Public Prosecutor Mir Ahmed Salam told The Daily Star.
Earlier the court recorded statements of 201 out of 303 prosecution witnesses including complainant of the case.

Justice Sinha was the first non-Muslim Chief Justice of Bangladesh. He was in January 2015.
In September 2017, a Supreme Court bench headed by Surendra Kumar Sinha had given a judgement striking down the 16th constitutional amendment of Bangladesh which gave power to Parliament to remove Justices of the apex court.
The judgment created tension between him and the government.
Surendra Kumar Sinha left Bangladesh for Australia in October 2017 three months before his retirement and sent his resignation in November that year from abroad.
After he left for Australia, the Supreme Court said that Justice Sinha had been facing 11 specific charges, including corruption, money laundering, financial irregularities and moral blunder.
