Cleveland County law enforcement help families in need for holidays

Shelby Police Department and the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office kicked off three days of gift-giving to those in need on Monday. Cheers of joy could be heard as children received packages delivered by Sheriff’s Office deputies. Toothy grins broke out as presents of dolls, sports equipment and more could be seen bursting out of the top of brightly colored bags. Families thanked the men and women for helping them with Christmas this year. Usually, officers would head inside for the present opening but due to COVID-19, many stayed at the door watching the kids with their presents.  This year has been a different type of Christmas for many in the community, Shelby Police Chief Jeff Ledford said.

Teen charged with firing at police dog

Teen charged with firing at police dog A teenager is in jail for allegedly shooting at a law enforcement officer. Christopher Poston, 18, was arrested over the weekend on charges of assaulting a police officer with a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a stolen vehicle, assaulting a law enforcement agent, reckless driving, fleeing to elude arrest and driving without a license.  The charges stem from an encounter with a Shelby Police officer who stopped Poston near the intersection of Peeble and Kenmore streets believing he might be driving a stolen vehicle.  Poston allegedly got out of the vehicle and ran away. Shelby Police employed a K-9 dog to track Poston. While fleeing from police, Poston allegedly fired at the dog. Police say the animal is uninjured.

Teen charged, two younger boys released

A teen faces charges in an apartment complex shooting that sent a 17-year-old to the hospital on Tuesday and kept 13-year-old and 14-year-old boys in police custody overnight.  Police believe Nyqualin Chatman, 18, was at the complex to take around $300 from the still unidentified 17 year old. Investigators are trying to determine where the $300 came from and what transpired in the common area of the four buildings that make up the apartment complex. Shelby Police kept 13- and 14-year-old boys in custody Tuesday night, but released them Wednesday morning without filing charges against them. Chatman reportedly left the area after the shooting.

A man was shot after reportedly shoplifting

A man reportedly trying to shoplift camping supplies and clothes from a Cleveland Mall store was fatally shot Monday and a store employee now faces a first-degree murder charge. “How did we go from shoplifting to homicide?” Shelby Police Chief Jeff Ledford wondered aloud. “I’m not sure. There are a lot of questions that need to be answered to understand that.” While the investigation continues, Ledford said Jacob Wesley Isenhour, who worked for Dunham s Sports, would not be in Cleveland County Jail facing a murder charge if he had picked up a phone and called police rather than take off after shoplifting suspect Bryan Allen Francis with a gun.
