Valerie O’Kelly s community came through in a big way this week by helping provide Christmas for her kids - all 236 of them. It has been a magnificent outpouring of love from the adult community to our children, said O Kelly, principal of Graham Elementary, ahead of a gift giveaway at the school on Blanton Road.
As families drove up to the school to pick up their children on Wednesday, parents were handed gifts to take home and give on Christmas. All of the gifts sent home were matched to students by teachers at the school.
Since late October the staff at Shelby City Parks has been soliciting donations for gifts to give to the children at Graham, even making a donation station part of their Christmas at the Parks events in December. The endeavor managed to raise enough toys, puzzles, games, dolls, action figures, backpacks and other surprises for every student at the school, including those learning remotely, to get a gift this year.
