What Happened: The Colonial Pipeline Co. announced on Twitter that it had returned to normal operations days after it restarted its pipeline following last week s ransomware attack.
Gasoline shortages along the U.S. East Coast have begun to ease slightly as the company starts delivering millions of gallons per hour, and ships and trucks have been deployed to fill up dry storage tanks.
The company had halted all pipeline operations after learning about the cyberattack. The six-day pipeline shutdown triggered widespread panic-buying by U.S. motorists that left filling stations across the U.S. Southeast out of gas.

Colonial Pipeline Co. paid nearly $5 million in untraceable cryptocurrency to the ransomware who shut down the nation’s largest fuel pipeline, according to a Bloomberg report sourcing “two people familiar with the transaction.”
What Happened: The payment was made on May 7, the day after the ransomware attack took place. Upon receiving their ransom, the hackers provided the decrypting tool needed to restore the Colonial Pipeline computer network that became imprisoned within their ransomware. However, the tool was reportedly so slow in working that the company used its own backups to speed the restoration of the system, according to Bloomberg.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Top U.S. fuel pipeline operator Colonial Pipeline shut its entire network, the source of nearly half of the U.S. East Coast s fuel supply, after a cyber attack that industry sources said was caused by ransomware.
The company transports 2.5 million barrels per day of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other refined products through 5,500 miles (8,850 km) of pipelines linking refiners on the Gulf Coast to the eastern and southern United States.
Colonial shut down systems to contain the threat after learning of the attack on Friday, it said in a statement. That action has temporarily halted operations and affected some of its IT systems, the company said.
