Former CAC director shares the story of its formation

In order to appreciate just how far an organization has come, it’s often useful to go back to its beginnings. Kathy Vinzant is known by many as the executive director of the United Way of Lincoln County. She retired from that position in March. Way back when the Lincoln County Coalition Against Child Abuse and the Child Advocacy Center were in their infancy, Vinzant was the director of those organizations. At the Annual Appreciation Luncheon for the coalition against child abuse and LCCAC held on Wednesday, Vinzant shared stories of how the organizations were formed. It was back in 1991 that Ola Mae Foster and Melinda Houser recognized the need for a means to educate the public about child abuse prevention. The quest to end child abuse in Lincoln County

It’s the time of year when blue and silver pinwheels blow in the wind in various public locations throughout Lincoln County. While a pinwheel is a whimsical toy that many children have played with, the childhood of some living in the county has been cut short due to child abuse or neglect. April is Child Abuse Awareness month, and the pinwheels are intended to bring awareness this type of abuse that thrives in secrecy and darkness. On a mission to investigate and prosecute abusers, help victims and their families through their trauma, and prevent future occurrences is the Lincoln County Child Coalition Against Child Abuse, the Lincoln County Child Advocacy Center and the circle of law enforcement, therapists, doctors and others who work together on a daily basis with abused children and their families.

Child abuse victim uses her pain to help others through their trauma

There was a bridal shower held at the Lincoln County Child Advocacy Center on Friday. While on the surface this shower may have seemed like a regular run-of-the-mill affair, it was far from that. This shower was held to honor a young woman whom after suffering indecencies at the hands of a trusted family friend was able to trust a man enough to marry him. Grace, not her real name, found herself at the door of the child advocacy center when she was 14. Her abuser was a trusted member of the family – someone who came over to her house for dinners and birthday parties.
