Comal County Sheriff Mark Reynolds on Tuesday confirmed five offenders tested positive for COVID-19 this week but disputed claims posted on social media on the severity of the first coronavirus cases at the new county jail.
âDuring the normal (screening) checks five people tested positive â the first cases weâve had at the jail,â Reynolds said. âThey have been isolated in negative-pressure cells and quarantined away from the others. Itâs not a rampant outbreak, despite what others might be saying.â
Comal has agreements with Bell, Hays and Coryell counties to house offenders at $65 per inmate per day, inside the local 582-bed lockup and has yet to board offenders held by San Antonioâs U.S. Marshalâs Service at $100 per offender per day.Â
Comal County Commissioners met for a third time with Canyon Lake area residents on the plan to revise rules at the nine county operated boat ramps, which wonât happen before the July 4 weekend.
Commissioners on June 10 tabled a vote until Thursday to hear from citizens who appeared that day and again June 16 to get more on the proposals, which County Judge Sherman Krause said would enforce existing water safety measures authored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority â and also control overcrowding and rowdy behavior.
Krause commended residents on their assistance in coming up with suggestions for solutions. He pointed to a recent Herald-Zeitung editorial that praised residents working with the county instead of blaming commissioners for problems all agree stem from growth.

Comal County Commissioners on Thursday will consider transferring $600,000 to pay for county office renovations, which in part will eventually be funded by boarding inmates from other Texas counties.Â
First, SpawGlass Contractors will see $47,418 subtracted from its contingency and the countyâs share will increase by $134,003 after commissioners approve the 12th change order for the Annex project, most of which is designated for video communications, security cameras and doors and design changes to accommodate both.
Previous change orders have increased the Annex renovations by $1.131 million, to $12.016 million, with Thursdayâs approvals extending the date of substantial completion from July 12 to July 22. Later in the meeting, commissioners will transfer $600,000 in budgeted funds to cover increased spending in all county construction projects.Â
After nearly two-dozen residents spoke last Thursday, most against Comal Countyâs proposed update of rules and regulations governing access and parking on county boat ramps at Canyon Lake, commissioners are hosting a workshop on the topic on Wednesday.
The 11 a.m. session in commissionerâs court chambers will discuss âRules and regulations on Comal County Boat Ramps,â the county said in a release on Monday that encouraged the public to attend the follow-up to last weekâs public hearing on the proposal to update rules on the nine county-operated boat ramps for the first time since 1994.Â
Commissioners, with Precinct 3âs Kevin Webb absent, tabled a vote on the changes until their June 24 meeting. County Judge Sherman Krause said last week most of the changes mirror the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authorityâs safety rules for the lake that werenât specified in county rules.Â
