GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (AP) A female inmate who stabbed a corrections officer multiple times with scissors in Alabama was charged with attempted murder, authorities said. Four other inmates intervened during the Saturday attack at the Marshall County Jail, likely saving the officer’s life, Sheriff Phil Sims said during a press conference Monday. “Even though they were inmates and this is a corrections officer, they went above and beyond their predicaments to do what was right,” Sims told reporters.

Officer Melissa Woodall was escorting inmate Emily Sledge, 21, from a makeshift holding cell to the main women’s block so she could use the restroom. They passed through a work cubicle on the way, which was where Sledge found scissors in a drawer and stabbed the officer, Sims said.

Five female inmates at the Marshall County Jail over the weekend rushed to the aid of a corrections officer who was being stabbed by another inmate, Sheriff Phil Sims said Monday.
The corrections officer, Melissa Woodall, opened a holding cell door to escort an inmate on a 15-foot walk to the restroom when the inmate, Emily Sledge, immediately attacked her.
“If not for the action of the other inmates,” Sims said at a press conference, “it is very likely Officer Woodall would have been killed.”
