BULLOCH COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - Law officers and others in Bulloch County paused Wednesday morning to remember a deputy killed in the line of duty exactly 20 years ago.
Colleagues and family of Sgt. Wilbur Berry say he went to that call 20 years ago tonight with the same mindset he came to work every day - to help people any way he could and arrest as a last resort. They say that is the spirit they celebrate every year.

The recent violence prevention forum hosted by the One Boro Commission unpacked several screen-loads of statistics as the victim services and advocacy organizations Safe Haven and The Teal House, as well as police agencies, sought to show the community the size of the problem.
The Statesboro Police Department made 40% fewer arrests in 2020 than the year before. The decline has been attributed mostly to a two-month pandemic shutdown on many local activities followed by a prohibition on booking nonviolent misdemeanor suspects into the Bulloch County Jail.

A Bloomingdale man faces charges of arson and aggravated assault after deputies say he set his car on fire inside the garage of a home in southern Bulloch County.
In a release from the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Noel Brown said Deputy Rhett Kelley responded to 1264 T.R. Smith Road at 8:30 p.m. Saturday after receiving a 911 call of a person ramming the residence with a vehicle.
Upon arriving at the scene, Kelley said it appeared a man, later identified as Christopher Harper of Bloomingdale, had pulled a vehicle into the garage and set it on fire.
