Defer to sheriff on need for jail
To the Editor:
There has been a bit of discussion and controversy over the proposal for Haywood County to spend in the neighborhood of $15 million to build a new jail. One of the arguments is that there are other needs that could be addressed for that amount of money. The problem is that some of the arguments don’t address the issue for the need of a new detention facility.
Some groups and individuals have correctly pointed out that mental health and substance use disorders appear to contribute to criminal behavior and recidivism. This is partially based on a study conducted in the Haywood County Detention Center showing high prevalence rates for these conditions and associations with recidivism.
For the second year in a row, the Racine County Sheriff’s Office provided its staff a chance to grow some facial hair for a good cause.
Starting in October, over 60 deputies and corrections officers gave a donation to the Women’s Resource Center in Racine in order to grow a beard, which is normally prohibited. The minimum to donate was $75, but some gave more.
Earlier this month, the sheriff’s office provided the center a check for $4,700.

“Our deputies, corrections officers and support staff wanted to do something special for the community again this year,” says Sheriff Christopher Schmaling. “I know that your needs are endless. The cause and the victims are real.”

“Our domestic assaults are up quite a bit, and I’m sure they are everywhere,” Christopher said.
Sheriff Christopher said while it wasn’t the nearly 100% increase they saw with child abuse, it was still significant. And much like the child abuse investigations, they point to COVID-19 as a reason for the spike, since many are forced to stay home.
“People are going to get on each other’s nerves no matter how much they love each other. No matter how much they enjoy the other’s company,” Christopher said. “You’re going to get on each other’s nerves when you stay together all the time.”
