THE IMPACT of the coronavirus pandemic on the local community was reiterated at a council meeting on Monday, with members told that it has likely driven wider inequalities in the isles.
Shetland Islands Councilâs (SIC) development director Neil Grant said the pandemic has âprobably made poverty a bigger issue for more peopleâ.

He told a meeting of the councilâs development committee that all of this needs to be addressed if âweâre to be a cohesive, successful communityâ – with more resources possibly needed to tackle this.
The big question, Grant added, was where do those resources come from. âIt all needs to be achieved in a balanced budget,â he warned.
Due to the size of the grant the funding had to be approved by councillors.
The project will look to support people and groups to access land, set up growing sites, get the most out of their plots, and use and share their produce with the wider community.
It will also work with experienced growers as volunteer grower mentors to support new growers in their local communities and will create an online resource for Shetland specific growing information, advice and support.
It echoes a Fair Food Policy approved by councillors last year which aims to increase food growing, encourage healthy eating and promote access to affordable food.
