The Vazhakulam Agro and Fruit Processing Company (VAFPCL) located at Muvattupuzha, considered the pineapple heartland of India, is getting ready for a leap in producing value-added products from fruits, having renovated its entire production machinery.
These machines were imported from Italy over two decades ago when the European Union-funded unit began functioning. The company has three production lines, including one to process and pack pineapple, apple, orange, guava and mixed fruit juices (under the brand name Jive), said Shibu Kumar, MD of VAFPC.
The second is a line dedicated to preparing pineapple concentrate, for which it recently began procuring the fruit for Horticorp at ₹15 per kg from farmers hard hit by the steep fall in its price.

Children will be more interested towards exploring Bangabandhu s life owing to the Graphic Novel Mujib and his childhood stories will be intriguing to them, said eminent litterateur and educationist Dr Muhammed Zafar Iqbal yesterday. We must pass on the stories of Bangabandhu to the next generation. Merely gathering information about him will not suffice. Rather, we must ensure that they can deeply internalise Bangabandhu s ideals as well, he said during the unveiling of the eighth episode of the graphic novel series.

VAFPC ventures hold out bright prospects for pineapple farmers
The Vazhakkulam Agro and Fruit Processing Company (VAFPC), jointly owned by the State government and pineapple farmers, is exploring the possibility of producing a Bromelain-enriched nutraceutical as well as pineapple leaf-based biodegradable, disposable cutleries, and plates with technical support from the Agro Processing Technology Division of CSIR National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram.
Detailed project reports are ready for the ventures that hold out prospects of a bright future for over 5,000 pineapple farmers in the State, who have brought around 18,000 hectares under the crop.

Soon, ‘Jive’, a brand of products launched under the collective, became a household name across the state. Despite providing natural varieties of juices and jams, the company eventually closed down over legal issues. However, the revival package of the state Agriculture Department has encouraged a comeback for the indigenous brand which will be releasing a new range of products and services.
