Elly Keyes hadn t thought very highly of a pen-and-ink drawing she’d made of the Kansas Statehouse during her sophomore year at Shawnee Heights High School, but then her teacher Avery Ayers-Berry encouraged her to enter it in as many competitions as she could.
About a year and a half after she first drew it, Keyes’ painting is now hanging in the U.S. Capitol.
“I didn’t like it at first,” said Keyes, who is now a junior. “It looked rough, since it was a pencil drawing at first. But the more I added, the better it started looking as I added more ink. It was fun to do all of the little details on the (Kansas) Capitol and the surrounding places.

Shelton praised the way Chestnut managed to take the Thompson Twins song and completely flip it.

Chestnut is a native of Americus, a city of about 900 people located near Emporia about 50 miles southwest of Topeka.
Shelton recalled during Monday s program that he performed at a community center in Emporia when that center was opened by race car driver and Emporia native Clint Bowyer.
Chestnut graduated from Northern Heights High School at Allen in northern Lyon County.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic kept Milk & Honey Coffee Co. s owners from holding a grand opening last year, they have several community-focused festivities planned for later this month to celebrate one year in business. We didn t do a ribbon cutting, we didn t do a grand opening for obvious reasons, said Darlene Morgan, co-owner of the coffee shop. So I thought, You know, I m really going to try and do it up this year.
And Morgan has invited the Topeka High School Drumline, the Highland Park High School Color Guard, Shawnee Heights High School students, Top City Flower Truck and others to participate.
