Shawn Spiegel of Shrewsbury planned to stop at a gas station in Maryland to fill up on Wednesday, but he decided against it after seeing a long line of cars at the Fill Er-Up.
Instead, he filled up at a Rutter s in Shrewsbury, where a gallon of regular gas cost $3.15. Normally, the price is much cheaper in Maryland, but currently, there s only a six cents difference. It s craziness right now, he said.
Nationally, gas prices topped $3 a gallon Wednesday for the first time in six years, according to GasBuddy. Analysts say it s related to people returning to work and activities as part of the recovery from the coronavirus pandemic. The demand for gasoline is increasing.
