Bush then declared by proclamation the same and every year since the current president continues the honor. Many of our Irish ancestors left Ireland to find a better life. When they arrived they were greeted with the sign N.I.N.A. No Irish Need Apply. With little choice many joined the dangerous police or fire service. With time they were accepted and contributed greatly to the professional development of our law enforcement and the fire and rescue services. As the years went by they also became active in politics, education and law.

Major Garda operation underway in Carrick-on-Shannon ahead of Traveller funeral Reporter:   ); A major Garda operation is currently underway in Carrick-on-Shannon ahead of a Traveller funeral due to be held tomorrow, Thursday. Gardai have established checkpoints on the N4 at the speed limits as you enter the town from the Longford direction. There is also a Garda checkpoint on the access road to the Attirory area opposite Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada. A checkpoint has also been established at the crossroads in Attirory as dozens of fully occupied vehicles and many more people on foot have been seen making their way to the Shannonside View Halting Site for the wake.
