Spotlight on Shirkey is glaring

Michigan Senator Majority Leader Mike Shirkey LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) Michigan Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey has been in the news a lot lately, but not for lawmaking. His comments to Hillsdale Republicans suggesting the January 6 insurrection at the United States Capitol was a hoax of some kind, his statements about “spanking” Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, or inviting her to a fight outside the Capitol have resulted in a national spotlight aimed in his direction. Shirkey issued an apology for his statements, then defended his points, if not his words. This week, he suggested the state used the votes of dead people in November’s election in an interview with Jackson radio station WKHM. About 3,500 ballots were tossed as Michigan election officials validated results and found that those people had died before November 3, but after mailing in absentee ballots, according to state officials.

A group of women Michigan lawmakers is calling on Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey to relinquish his leadership role for his pattern of “degrading and disturbing” comments about Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. The Michigan Progressive Women’s Caucus said Shirkey, R-Clarklake, should step down as Senate Majority Leader Thursday, citing his remarks in a video recorded by the Hillsdale County Republican Party where he dubbed the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol attack a “hoax,” said he’d thought about challenging Whitmer to a fistfight and boasted that he’d “spanked” her on a number of political issues.
