There is existing evidence that air pollution is a new risk factor for type 2 diabetes development. Physical activity is known to increase air pollutants inhalation, which may increase the negative health effects of air pollution. Due to little information on the combined effects of air pollution and habitual physical activity on type 2 diabetes development, the risk-benefit relationship has become an important public health concern as over 91% of the world s population live in places where WHO guidelines on air quality are not met.
