Election2021: Spotlight on the battle for Glasgow Provan

THE Glasgow Provan seat was created after boundaries were redrawn 10 years ago. It is one of the seats that the SNP took from Labour in 2016 completing its takeover of all the city’s Holyrood constituencies. Ivan McKee is defending the second smallest majority in the city but still had a lead of almost 5000 votes over Labour in 2016. The area takes in East End communities like Easterhouse, Carntyne, Ruchazie, Dennistoun and Robroyston. It is home to some of the areas in the city with the highest levels of deprivation and also many community groups working to improve lives in the area.

Susan Aitken promises Glasgow libraries are safe from closure

WRITING here last August I said there were no plans to shut any of Glasgow’s libraries, adding that none would remain closed for any longer than was absolutely necessary. Eight months on and that hasn’t changed. I said libraries wouldn’t close and I meant it. The SNP City government is not in the business of removing library services from communities. We must be, however, clear-eyed about the impact of the pandemic. Any politician claiming that things can return to normal overnight as though Covid has never happened is being deliberately misleading. And when they have been kept fully informed of the ramifications of this unforeseen global catastrophe for Glasgow Life, as Labour and Tory councillors have, it’s more disingenuous still.

Glasgow Greens Kim Long: We will meet the needs of Glasgow s people after Covid with £2m pot

Kim Long: We will meet the needs of Glasgow s people after Covid with £2m pot THIS week has been the conclusion of the budget process both nationally in the Scottish Parliament and locally in Glasgow. It’s a strange time to be setting financial priorities for our city – we are still in the midst of crisis, desperate to get beyond it, and trying to plan for recovery when it’s still not yet possible to see the full extent of the enormous damage that has been wrought by the pandemic. Sometimes the needs of our communities feel overwhelming – the lack of access to food, the uncertainty about work for so many people, rent and bills going up and up – and all alongside disconnection from support networks, loneliness, and mental health issues worsening.
