New Recruits For Isle Of Wight Search And Rescue Team As Call-Outs Rise

The Isle of Wight s Search and Rescue team says the pandemic has been a challenging time , with a slight rise in call-outs.
WightSAR, which is made up of more than 30 volunteers, has seen an increase in calls regarding mental health.
Speaking to Isle of Wight Radio, Founder Dean Terrett said: On the Island we have a high rate of elderly. A lot of the time a good percentage of the calls were when an elderly person had a fall in the countryside. Or they could be dementia-associated. Naturally we have a high number of those.

Volunteers would usually have to travel to Mainland for courses, but these Island-based exercises allowed 12 volunteers to gain their accreditation last weekend
Search and rescue services on the Island have received a massive boost following a ground-breaking training exercise held in Wootton at the weekend.
As
a result of the two-day course, 12 volunteers from Isle of Wight
Search and Rescue (WightSAR) now have learned the skills and
certificate required for them to be able to join real searches.

FOUR charity projects that use computer technology to reduce social exclusion on the Island have been boosted by funding from the Isle of Wight Foundation. They will share a total of nearly £30,000. Each year, the foundation supports projects working to tackle social exclusion on the Island. Since 2014, it has awarded more than £543,000 to such good causes. In the last 12 months alone, more than £73,000 has been shared between ten local projects. Mountbatten hospice will use its £6,700 to purchase 30 laptops for its Neighbours remote support initiative while Aspire will use the £6,730 grant to provide computer equipment and furniture for a new skills hub.
