Feds spend $364K on 18 projects to boost N.W.T. seniors social inclusion
Money awarded to community-based projects as part of the New Horizons for Seniors Program will support elders in communities and fund programming that boosts their social inclusion, and mentorship of younger generations.

The federal government announced today it will spend $364,329 on 18 community-based projects that support the social inclusion of elders.
The projects include elder mentorship programs, on-the-land programming, virtual beading sessions, friendship centre programs and hot lunch delivery, as well as programs for gardening, curling and the preservation of oral traditions.

It began with Sr. Fay Trombley of Catholic Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception.
Upon settling into her new home of Tuktoyaktuk, N.W.T., over 15 years ago, she quickly noticed that this small hamlet nestled close to the Arctic Ocean perennially experienced shortages of food and goods.
She mobilized her contacts, particularly the Society of Saint Vincent De Paul (SSVP) in Alberta, to secure the items and funding to make a difference.
Her grassroots effort germinated into the SSVP North of 60 Project, an ambitious initiative executed by nine different parish teams, including eight in northern Alberta and one from Calgary. Each SSVP conference twins with a Northwest Territories municipality north of the 60th parallel as steep food and goods prices perpetrate impoverished conditions upon these communities.

Traditional Dene ceremony marks first production at Nechalacho rare earth mine

The Nechalacho Rare Earth mine hosted last week the ceremonial commissioning of the sensor-based ore sorter at Canada’s first producing rare earth mine, in Canada’s Northwest Territories.
Vital Metals Limited (ASX: VML) began rare earth production at its Nechalacho project, 110 kilometres east of Yellowknife in early July.

Members of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation joined in the event and witnessed the first production of rare earth concentrate from one of the world’s richest deposits.
