My big takeaway: I can t imagine how many women ran these places. In the early 2000s, it was hard to find a handful of women who were executive chefs or owning restaurants. But that wasn t the case in the 70s.
After I handed the story off to my editor, he asked about all those James Beard nominees of the past 10 years. Where were they? They certainly run the restaurants that have cemented Providence s culinary reputation. So another story began.

The other week I accidentally came upon a TV series on PBS called The Road to Rome, about eight British personalities of varying faiths and nonfaiths, ages and physical conditions walking on the ancient Via Francigena pilgrimage route to the Eternal City. It’s part of a wider series on the network about religious pilgrimages.
