Washington Bridge rebuild snags on lawsuit

A planned rebuild of the Washington Bridge, which takes Route 195 over the Seekonk River, has been delayed by a lawsuit filed by a contractor that bid on the project. But the state Department of Transportation says the $70-million project should still go ahead this year and will preserve the Gano Street off-ramp, a priority of some residents of Providence s East Side. The project is expected to complete repairs to the westbound lanes of the Washington Bridge, which were partially fixed in a $20-million phase of work that wrapped up in 2019. That project had to be revised after lane closures on the bridge caused major traffic backups in East Providence.
