Wareham Police Chief John Walcek Retiring
WAREHAM The Wareham Police Department has announced the impending retirement of Chief John Walcek.
Walcek will officially retire on Saturday, April 17, ending a nearly 34-year association with the Wareham Police Department.
“I consider it an honor and privilege to have been afforded the opportunity to serve Wareham and its residents for so many years,” Chief Walcek said.

Walcek has served as chief since February of 2020, after becoming acting chief in 2018 following the retirement of former Chief Kevin Walsh.
Walcek first began working for the Wareham Police Department in 1987, when at the age of 20 he was hired as a summer special officer. Prior to that, he had worked as a call firefighter at the West Wareham station in 1984 while still in high school. He also worked for the Municipal Maintenance Department during the summer throughout his teenage years.
Wareham Police Arrest Woman for Allegedly Stealing Tools
WAREHAM Wareham Police arrested a woman recently after allegedly stealing for than $1,200 worth of goods from Lowe’s over separate visits.
On Friday, February 19, at about 11:40 a.m. Officers Jennifer Braley and Calib Larue arrested Mattison Nikolov, 35, of Wareham, at Lowe’s for shoplifting.
It is suspected that she put tools in an empty trash barrel and scanned the barrel; however, she did not scan the tools. She was stopped by loss prevention personnel and it was determined that $729 worth of items had not been scanned.

After the arrest was made, the two officers began to investigate the case further. With the assistance of loss prevention staff, it is believed that Nikolov had been in the store on two dates since January 27, and each time had shoplifted items.
Body Recovered from Icy Water in Wareham
UPDATE:
The Plymouth County District Attorney s Office has identified the victim as Thomas Barthlomew, 44, of Wareham. No foul play is suspected and the medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death.
WAREHAM The body of the male who was the subject of a rescue attempt at a Wareham bog reservoir on Sunday has been recovered.
According to authorities, the body of the male was recovered by members of the Wareham Fire Department and the Plymouth County Technical Rescue Dive Team at about 12:30 p.m. this afternoon.
“Obvious, this was not the outcome we were looking for,” Wareham Police Chief John Walcek said. “But we did recover the body of a male that had jumped into the water.”
Wareham police and fire were unsuccessful in their attempts to locate the man, so additional assistance was requested including the Wareham Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Police.
The Plymouth County Technical Rescue Team (PCTRT) was also activated and multiple departments and members of PCTRT responded to the scene, including the regional dive team.
Emergency personnel performed search operations in difficult conditions until 11:45 p.m. Sunday when the search was postponed due to time and weather conditions. The water is murky. Stumps, trees and other objects are in there, so there s a lot of hazards they re trying to get around, Wareham Assistant Fire Chief Patrick Haskell said. Plus there s ice trying to get ice moved around under the ice using divers, sonar.
