Initial unemployment claims ending the week of July 17 were 20,548, an increase of 13,083 claims over the 7,465 initial claims reported for the week ending July 10.
The increase in initial claims is mitigated somewhat by a slight drop in overall unemployment in the state. For the week ending July 10, 71,255 claims were reported, a 5,531 drop in claims from the previous weekâs 76,786 claims.
The latest USDOL numbers reverse the upward employment trajectory the state experienced between January and June of this year.
Last month, the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget
reported jobless rates were unchanged in seven regions, and seven other major Michigan regions had jobless rate changes of 0.2 percentage points or less.
