IRON MOUNTAIN The Upper Peninsula jobless rate was unchanged in March, remaining at 6.5%, according to data released by the Michigan Department of Technology Management & Budget.
Dickinson County’s not seasonally adjusted rate of 5.2% compared to 5.1% in February and 5% in March 2020. Iron County’s jobless rate of 6.8% in March was also nearly unchanged from February, when it was 6.7%, but down slightly from 7.1% a year ago.
“Michigan regional jobless rates displayed little change in March,” said Wayne Rourke, associate director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives.
The Michigan jobless rate of 5.2% in March was up from 5.1% in February and 4.5% a year ago.

Regional Michigan jobless rates display mixed trends in March

LANSING, Mich. Not seasonally adjusted jobless rates edged down slightly in 10 of Michigan’s 17 major labor market areas during March, according to data released today from the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget. Unemployment rates inched up in three regions and remained unchanged in four areas.
“Michigan regional jobless rates displayed little change in March,” said Wayne Rourke, associate director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives. “Nonfarm job levels advanced modestly in nearly all Michigan metro areas over the month.”
Michigan regional unemployment rate changes were minor in March, with monthly rate decreases ranging from 0.1 to 0.3 percentage points. Michigan s unemployment rate dropped slightly in March, but it s still higher compared with a year ago, before the pandemic led to mass furloughs and layoffs.
The state s jobless rate declined to 5.1% in March, down slightly from 5.2% in February, the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget said Wednesday. The same month a year ago, the unemployment rate in Michigan was 3.7%.
Michigan s jobless rate peaked in the pandemic in April 2020 at nearly 24%. It has hovered around 8% from August until the end of last year, before dropping below 6% in January.
