A man who fell asleep while cooking was rescued from his flat after a fire broke out in the kitchen. Fire crews from Rayleigh Weir and Hawkwell were called to a first floor flat in High Street, Rayleigh, yesterday (April 28) at 1.23pm after a neighbour heard a smoke alarm sounding. It came after a man had put a couple of pans on the cooker and fallen asleep while cooking, causing his flat to fill with smoke. The team managed to wake him so he could let them in, but he was suffering from smoke inhalation. They gave him first aid, made sure the fire was fully extinguished and used a fan to clear the smoke.
