RICHMOND, Ind. With now hiring signs sprouting like dandelions this spring, employers might need something extra to entice workers.
The Wayne County Area Chamber of Commerce is introducing a second program to make it more affordable for local companies to provide employees extra benefits. This time, it s an opportunity to offer 401(k) retirement savings.
Melissa Vance, president and CEO of the chamber, said local salaries do seem to be rising because of the competitive hiring situation, so that makes the extras offered to employees even more important. How do you sweeten the pot to be able to not just attract employees to start with but to retain them once they get there?” Vance said.

RICHMOND, Ind. More than 1,500 Wayne County households shared information about their home internet service and usage during a countywide March survey.
The results show the county needs improved broadband service, from better coverage to faster speeds, and the Wayne County Broadband Taskforce is taking steps to make that possible.
According to the Purdue Center for Regional Development, which partnered with the county group, 1,536 households, more than 5% of the county s households, participated in the survey. Of those, 1,327 allowed their locations to be mapped. The responses came from throughout the county.
“We’re really pleased with the response, said Acacia St. John, the program coordinator for Forward Wayne County. From what we understand from all the surveys that have been done like that around the state of Indiana, we were told we had the second-highest sample. So that’s great.
Melissa Vance, the chamber s president and CEO, said health insurance has always been an issue.
“As soon as I stepped foot in the door at the chamber six years ago, I was starting to get to know the business owners, and one of the things that just kept coming up was the cost of health care, the cost of health care, the cost of health care, she said. And also small businesses being able to retain their employees versus the employees going to a larger employer where they have healthcare benefits.
At the time, however, federal law prohibited chamber involvement, so Vance s hands were tied. Now, however, another Indiana chamber facilitated the local chamber s connection with United Healthcare.
