University of Mississippi associate professor of sociology and international studies Miguel Centellas has officially entered the race for Board of Aldermen, running to represent Ward VI. Centellas, a Democrat and Oxford resident since 2015, will face incumbent Republican Jason Bailey for the seat.
Centellas joins Afton Thomas as the second university employee to enter the race for a seat on the Board of Aldermen. Thomas is running as a Democrat against incumbent Republican Mark Huelse to represent Ward II.
In a Facebook post on Monday, Centellas said he decided to run for the position when the Lafayette County Democratic Party approached him about doing so. He said that although he made the decision to run for office suddenly, he takes it very seriously and felt it was his duty to serve his community.
Aldermen Donate $1,150 from Maintenance Fees to Help OXCM
January 27, 2021
The Oxford Board of Aldermen voted Monday to donate $1,150 to the Oxford Community Market that the city normally would have collected over the next six months from the rent the market pays to use the Old Armory Pavilion.
The pavilion is owned by the city but managed, via a contract, by the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council. OXCM has been paying $50 a week to host the weekly market on Tuesday year-round, which is discounted from the $150 charged to other organizations to use the pavilion.
According to the contract between the city and YAC, $50 of any rent collected goes back to the city to help cover costs for maintenance of the pavilion.

OXFORD
⢠Joseph Stinchcomb, bar director at Saint Leo Restaurant in Oxford, was two months into his Sam Beall fellowship in Boulder, Colorado, when he received an email from the programâs executive director: His trip was coming to an abrupt halt.
âIt was that night. I (asked), when am I going home? He (told me) tomorrow morning at 6 a.m.,â Stinchcomb said. âI got the email Friday afternoon. I got on the plane Saturday morning and flew back to Oxford.â
