Four years ago, while out at lunch with a friend, I started drawing a logo on a thin and uncooperative napkin.
When I got back to the office, napkin in hand, I sketched out the shoddy design on a sheet of paper, even though the sturdier texture did nothing to help my lack of drawing skills.
Still, I managed to capture the image rolling around in my head of the words “Cape Fear Unearthed,” the first two stacked on top of the third with a shovel forming the “F” and dug into the “Unearthed.”
I was instantly inspired. In my gut, I believed I had created something truly special, even though at that point it was just an idea for a podcast telling the stories of local history, one episode at a time.

Jan. 27 LELAND For Anthony Dowe, 2021 was off to a rotten start until it turned around with the help of a winning lottery ticket.
On Saturday, the Leland resident discovered he had won $2 million in Friday night s huge $1 billion Mega Millions lottery drawing just hours after he had run into some bad luck. WILMINGTON – Anyone who knows their local history will likely have recognized similarities between Wednesday s violent coup attempt in the nation s capital and the 1898 Wilmington Massacre.
The sense of deja vu certainly wasn t lost on the creative team behind the Wilmington on Fire documentary films, which focus on the 1898 coup attempt by white supremacists that claimed an untold number of African Americans lives.
On the film s Facebook page, a post summed up Wednesday s events in Washington, D.C. – 1898 all over again.
On Wednesday, the United States Congress convened to follow the laws outlined in the Constitution to certify the results of November s election and finalize the Electoral College victory of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. But as Congress met to hear objections brought by some members, protestors carrying flags and signs praising President Donald Trump and echoing his claims of a fraudulent election gathered outside
