WILMINGTON – Anyone who knows their local history will likely have recognized similarities between Wednesday's violent coup attempt in the nation's capital and the 1898 Wilmington Massacre.
The sense of deja vu certainly wasn't lost on the creative team behind the "Wilmington on Fire" documentary films, which focus on the 1898 coup attempt by white supremacists that claimed an untold number of African Americans lives.
On the film's Facebook page, a post summed up Wednesday's events in Washington, D.C. – "1898 all over again."
On Wednesday, the United States Congress convened to follow the laws outlined in the Constitution to certify the results of November's election and finalize the Electoral College victory of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. But as Congress met to hear objections brought by some members, protestors carrying flags and signs praising President Donald Trump and echoing his claims of a fraudulent election gathered outside the Capitol Building.
