Alamance, Davidson, Randolph residents asked to donate blood

Donors who give in February will receive a $5 Amazon.com gift The Dispatch Residents of  Alamance, Davidson and Randolph counties are asked to give blood in honor of Black History Month in February to celebrate the legacies of Drs. Charles Drew and Jerome Holland. Those who have recovered from COVID-19 are especially asked to give blood. COVID-19 survivors are needed to address a convalescent plasma shortage. These individuals may have antibodies in their plasma that could help patients currently battling the virus. There are plenty of blood drives planned for Alamance, Davidson and Randolph counties in February. Drew, an African American surgeon, was the medical director of the first Red Cross blood bank in 1941. Drew’s research about the storage and shipment of blood plasma proved that blood could be stored for transfusions. Many of the processes he developed are still in use today.

Fire department extends Christmas for some

Christmas continued for an extra day last week for several youngsters in the Westfield community and their families as volunteers and members of the Westfield Volunteer Fire Department delivered toys and meals. The delivery was the culmination of a month-long collaborative effort between the fire department, Westfield’s Family Dollar Store and the Westfield Baptist Church. Originally scheduled for Christmas Eve, deliveries were delayed until Saturday due to Thursday’s heavy rains. According to firefighters, children in several neighborhoods were eagerly anticipating the flashing lights of fire trucks, signaling the arrival of gifts. Excited youngsters accompanied by family members crowded around to greet volunteers and to express their appreciation.

Mary Romine organized a group of family and friends to go the Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theater, Wytheville, Virginia, to see the musical Country Christmas. The food was delicious, the musical was awesome and the fellowship was delightful. Mary gave everyone Christmas bells to wear, Mary and the musical got the Christmas Spirit started!

Westfield FD toy drive underway | Mt Airy News

By Dean Palmer Special to the News Firefighters and volunteers will be leaving the Westfield Volunteer Fire Department station at 10:45 a.m. Christmas Eve day to deliver toys, coats and food to area Westfield community youngsters and their families. The fifth annual Westfield Volunteer Fire Department community toy drive is now underway and this year’s effort will include coats, hygiene items and meals for the child’s family. “We continue to have people and groups hear about this and want to be a part of what we’re doing,” Westfield Fire Chief Jonathan Sutphin said. “We appreciate everyone who is taking part and we’re hoping that it will continue to grow.”
